VERONA, N.Y. (9/2/2013) -- Senior
Brendan Leonard and sophomore
Wil Wittmann both cemented a top-10 finish with a career low 4-under 68 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team wrapped up its fall opener at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.
Wittmann picked up right where he left off yesterday – when he carded a 74 and a 69 – finishing tied for fifth with a career-low 5-under 211, just four shots off the lead and tying him for ninth place in Titan history. It was the best three-round tournament score by a Titan since Britt Pronk tallied a 211 at the John Dallio Memorial in 2008. It was also his second career tournament that he finished under par following a 1-under 215 at last year's Detroit Titan Invitational.
Leonard was right there to match his teammate stroke-for-stroke today as his 68 gave him a 214 scorecard, tying him for ninth place. His 214 also tied his career high set last year at the Titan Invitational, which is the only other time he has finished under par in a 54-hole event.
Freshman
Kyle Gaines ended a fine rookie debut with a 1-over 73 on the final 18 as he shared 38th with a 227 (84-70-73), while fellow freshman
Spencer Lendzion claimed 61st with a 239 (80-79-80).
As a team, Detroit lowered its score for the third-straight round posting its best score of the 54-hole event with a 289 to take seventh with an 886 (306-291-289). UDM was just one shot out of sixth place and four away from a top-five effort in its season opener. Host Missouri won the tournament with an 842 on the Par 72, 7,105-yard Kaluhyat Course at Turning Stone Resort.
The Titans will return to action in two weeks when they make the short drive to Ann Arbor to compete in the Wolverine Intercollegiate, held at the University of Michigan Golf Course from Sept. 16-17.
