DETROIT (1/11/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team played its second-straight road match to open the season as the Titans were outgunned at No. 47 Michigan State, 7-0, on Saturday morning at MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
The Spartans (1-0) are head coach
Grant Asher's alma mater as he played No. 1 singles and doubles for four years at Michigan State (1988-92) before graduating in 1992. He was named the team's MVP for four consecutive years and earned the All-Big Ten Award.
UDM (0-2) had a strong showing at the top doubles position as the team of junior
Jay Joshi and freshman
Chance Conley were edged, 6-5 (4).
In singles, freshman
Patryk Koscielski started out slow dropping his first set, 6-0, at No. 2, but he almost took it to a tiebreaker falling 6-5 (1) in the second. Joshi battled his way to a 6-3, 6-4, setback at No. 3, while sophomore
Rafael Orantes nearly won his first set, 6-5 (3), before falling in the second, 6-2.
Freshman
Ismail Kadyrov was outdueled, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6, and Conley lost 6-0, 6-4, at No. 5.
The Titans will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 18, at Ball State.
