SOUTH BEND, Ind. (12/5/2014) -- Senior
Louisa Coppola won the 3,000-meter run Friday to highlight action as the University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field team opened the 2014-15 season at the Blue and Gold Invitational on the campus of Notre Dame. Several Titans were making their track and field debuts in the individual-only invitational, which featured teams from Notre Dame, Northern Illinois, Marquette, DePaul and Bethel.
Coppola cracked the 10-minute mark in her season debut, placing first with a time of 9:59.86 in the 3,000-meter run. Freshman
Sydnie Fetherolf placed third with a time of 10:38.29, while fellow freshmen
Taylor Smith (11:02.89),
Jenny Ponkowski (11:15.11) and
Sydney Shaw (11:50.37) also ran in the 3,000m in their first collegiate track and field meet.
Junior
Allison Garner placed third in the 60-meter dash finals, posting a personal-record time of 7.68. Junior
Jessica Doherty ran an 8.07, while freshmen sprinters
Brogan Holmes (8.10) and
Alyson Hamilton (8.16) made their collegiate debuts in the race.
Senior
Shannon Marchant ran a time of 58.79 to lead the Titans in the 400-meter dash. Sophomore
Jayona Dent clocked a 59.59, junior
Alani Letang finished in 1:00.16 and freshman
Elizabeth Mullen posted a time of 1:00.25. Senior
Hana Hunt also posted a time of 1:02.16 in the 400m.
Junior
Aisha Potts-Tyre placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.21 meters to lead Detroit. Sophomore
Paige Anderson had a jump of 4.99 meters in the long jump, while senior
Hana Hunt recorded a jump of 4.35 meters for the Titans.
Potts-Tyre also placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles finals, with a personal-record time of 9.09. Hunt had a time of 9.74 and sophomore
Natalie Peterson was just behind in 9.85 in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries. Junior
Grace Battista also had a time of 10.49 in the event.
Letang led Detroit in the 200-meter dash, recording a time of 25.41 to place fifth in the event. Holmes and Garner each had times of 26.27 in the 200m as Detroit had 11 runners in all compete in the race.
The Titans' top relay team of Letang, Mullen, Dent and Marchant finished in a time of 4:08.04 in the 4x400 meter relay.
Detroit next competes in 2015 at the Eastern Michigan University Triangular on Jan. 9 in Ypsilanti, Mich.
