Titans Keep it Close against No. 19 Minnesota

Box Score

TEMPE, Ariz. (2/28/14) - The University of Detroit Mercy softball team hung tough on Friday with the No. 19 ranked team in the nation, but in the end the Titans fell to Minnesota, 6-0, in the Louisville Slugger Invitational hosted by Arizona State University.

Minnesota scored one run in both the bottom of the first and second innings to build an early 2-0 lead. Detroit would keep it close and gain a couple runners on the bases in the top of the second, but couldn't get them across the plate.

With the score still 2-0 heading into the top of the fourth the Titans got a lead off single from Katy Severson, who was advanced to second on a sac bunt from Kayla Kostich, but that would be as close as Detroit would get to scoring as Christa McGahuey and Katelyn Steffel popped out to end the threat. The Golden Gophers then responded with two more runs in the bottom half of the fourth before adding two more assurance runs in the sixth to seal the win.

Junior Kat Hoffman was in the circle for Detroit and pitched five innings allowing five earned runs, while scattering eight hits with two strikeouts.

Kostich finished the day 1-for-2 at the plate and has recorded at least one hit in the both of the games to start the weekend in Arizona.

Detroit will continue play at the Louisville Slugger Invitational on Saturday as the Titans face Ball State with first pitch scheduled for Noon (ET).
