Franklin Athletic Club
HLN Detroit Preview With Cawood
DETROIT (2/6/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team will be back in action this weekend as the Titans battle IPFW and Wayne State in a pair of home matches at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield.
Detroit will face IPFW on Friday, Feb. 7, and local-rival WSU on Sunday, Feb. 9, with Friday's match to begin at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday's at 7:30.
The Titans (2-5) had a long weekend last week with three matches in two days as UDM came up with a 4-3 win over Southern Illinois to start things off before dropping a 7-0 contest to Northern Illinois and a tough 4-3 affair to Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Freshman
Patryk Koscielski continues to lead the team with nine total wins and seven singles victories, while sophomore
Rafael Orantes is 6-5 in singles, but has two decisive triumphs at No. 4 to help seal both Titan wins.
IPFW is 3-2 on the season and on a three-match winning streak beating Toledo (4-3), UIC (6-1) and Chicago State (7-0). The Mastodons opened the season with a couple of common opponents that Detroit has already played falling at Ball State (5-2) and at NIU (7-0).
Detroit is 5-0 all-time against IPFW since it was reinstated as a varsity sport back in 2008. The Titans have owned the Mastodons with 5-2 wins in 2010, 2012 and 2013 and a 6-1 tally in 2011, while the other match in this span was a 4-3 showdown in 2009.
This will be Wayne State's season opener as the Warriors have been idle since competing in a few fall tournaments. The Warriors did have a pair of netters post 4-1 singles records in Stephane Robineau and Clement Charriere in the fall at events held at Grand Valley, Toledo and UDM.
The Titans are 14-7 all-time against Wayne State and have won four in a row in the series since 2008, with all four matches a 6-1 thrashing.
Results of the matches will be posted as soon as they are known.
