NASHVILLE, Tenn. (2/9/14) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its final two games of the Music City Classic hosted at Belmont University on Sunday. The Titans lost their first game 6-2 to East Tennessee State, before falling 9-1 to the host school Belmont in the nightcap at E.S. Rose Park.

Julia Maksym started the first game in the circle for the Titans and kept the Buccaneers scoreless for the first three innings, before ETSU sent a runner across the plate once in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead. In the top of the sixth inning the Buccaneers put together a pair of singles followed by a triple and double to score three runs and extend their lead to 5-0. In the bottom half of the inning Detroit's bats came alive as the Titans recorded three hits of their own, including back-to-back RBI singles from
Katy Severson and
Kayla Kostich, to get on the board and trim the lead to three, 5-2.
ETSU (2-2) added one more run in the top of the seventh off a home run from Jackie Baird to help seal the 6-2 win.
Maksym finished pitching 5.1 innings allowing nine hits and five earned runs while striking out one and walking zero. Taylor Carter started for ETSU and threw 5.1 innings herself giving up five hits with two earned runs and two strikeouts.
Belmont (2-2) came out swinging in the nightcap as the Bruins scored five runs in the first inning, including a grand slam from Jessica Wilson, en route to a 9-1 win in five innings.
Detroit (1-4) got one run back in the top of the second inning off an RBI double from Severson and loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third inning before
Sam Henderson grounded into an inning ending double play to keep the score 5-1.
The Bruins then responded by scoring two more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to finish the game.
Kat Hoffman (3-5), Kostich (3-6),
Christa McGahuey (2-5) and Severson (3-3) led Detroit at the plate as they combined to hit 11-for-19 with three RBI and two runs scored.
After a week off the Titans will hit the road for a visit to Hattiesburg, Miss. for four games against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on February 21-23. The first game will be on Friday (Feb. 21) at 6:00 p.m. (ET), followed by a doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 22), before concluding the trip on Sunday (Feb. 23). All four games will be played at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
