DETROIT (3/13/2014) --
The last test before the Horizon League season will be this weekend as the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team will hit the road for a pair of matches against Toledo and No. 41 Michigan.

"It will definitely be another strong test for us to see where we are," said head coach Grant Asher. "Toledo is always a strong program that is looking to win the MAC and Michigan is a nationally ranked team."

Detroit enters the weekend at 2-8 and will be looking to end a five-match slide. Freshman Patryk Koscielski and sophomore Rafael Orantes continue to top the team in singles as Koscielski is 8-8 on the year, while Orantes is 7-7. Koscielski also leads the team with 11 total wins as he has three in doubles play.

UDM will visit Toledo on Friday, March 14, at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Rockets are 5-14 on the season as they just dropped three in a row in their Florida spring break trip.

"We played them close last year and beat them a few years ago so it will be a good challenge for us as we keep working and getting better before the Horizon League starts," added Coach Asher.

Mark Singnil is UT's top singles player at 12-5, including 10-3 at No. 1, while Stjepan Sisko is 10-8 overall and 10-4 at No. 2. Sisko and Garrett Cona also combine to lead the team with a 9-6 mark in doubles.

Detroit is 1-17 all-time against Toledo with the lone victory in 2010. Last season, UDM was edged, 4-3.

The Titans will then return to the Great Lakes State to battle the Wolverines on Saturday, March 15, at 6:00 p.m., at the Varsity Tennis Center. UM is 7-4 on the season and has won four in a row, including a victory over No. 18 Vanderbilt. Prior to the match against the red, white and blue, Michigan will face No. 24 Columbia.

Alex Buzzi leads the team with an 11-9 record, while No. 122 Alex Petrone is right behind him at 10-10. The maize and blue also have three other netters with at least eight wins. The 52nd-ranked duo of Shaun Bernstein and Kevin Wong top the doubles tandems with a near perfect 11-1 record and Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu have teamed up for a 10-7 mark. The duo of Alex Buzzi and Barrett Franks is also ranked No. 22.

"Our guys are always excited to play these caliber of opponents," said Coach Asher. "We haven't played Michigan since I have been here and it just gives our guys another chance to play one of the top programs in the country."

Michigan leads the all-time series, 12-1, but the squads have not met since the Titans were reinstated as a varsity program in 2008-09. There will be live scoring and live video of that match you can follow by clicking here.
