Round One Results
AVON, Ind. (3/25/2014) -- Jack Frost must not like spring sports because he keeps getting in the way and this time he interrupted play on the links as the University of Detroit Mercy women's golf team saw its second round of the Butler Spring Invitational cancelled on Tuesday.
"The weather wasn't great and we weren't at our best, but we still have time to work on some things," said head coach
Terri Anthony-Ryan. "We left some putts out there yesterday, but between the weather and some health issues, I like the way we went ahead and grinded things out."
With snow covering the ground, play was not able to resume as Detroit ended in sixth place at the Par 71, 6,085-yard Prestwick Country Club. UDM totaled a 321 in Monday's opening round, but only eight shots separated the Titans from the top spot. Host Butler won with a 313, while Cleveland State and Chicago State tied for second at 314. Dayton was fourth with a 316 and Robert Morris was just ahead of the red, white and blue with a 319 card.
The event did see senior
Lindsey Lammers tie a school record with her seventh career medalist honors as she was named the winner in a scorecard playoff, which was determined from the best hole-to-hole score starting from 18 and going backwards. Lammers tallied a 3-over 74 in round one and was in a three-way tie, but with birdies on her last two holes, she was named the victor.
The win was her second of the year and she is now tied with former teammate and two-time All-Horizon League honoree
Alainna Stefan (2007-2011) for the most victories in school history.
Junior
Olivia Richards tied for 21st with an 81, while freshman
Sarah Thompson had an 82 to share 24th. Junior
Jessica Mallender carded an 84 for 33rd place and senior
Christina Thorne rounded out the unit with an 86 for 39th.
UDM cancelled its Detroit Titan Invitational that was scheduled for early next week and will next play in the IPFW Spring Invitational from April 6-7 at the Pine Valley Country Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
