Five Run Seventh Inning Lifts Lobos Past Detroit

Box Score

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (3/7/14) – Junior Kayla Kostich drove in three runs and classmate Kat Hoffman pitched five scoreless innings but it wasn't enough as New Mexico scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun the University of Detroit Mercy softball team, 6-5, Friday evening at the Lobo Softball Field.

Detroit (2-14) held a 5-1 lead and was just three outs away from taking the first game of the weekend series against New Mexico (5-14), before the Lobos erupted with five runs including a sacrifice fly RBI from Michala Erickson for the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Detroit scored first with two runs in the top of the first and two more in the second, including a two-run home run from Kostich, to build an early 4-0 lead. The Titans would then extend their lead to 5-0 after an RBI double from Kostich brought home Hoffman in the fourth inning.

Hoffman who started in the circle for the Titans then kept the Lobos scoreless for the first five innings, before giving up one unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. After recording one out in the seventh and giving up two more unearned runs Hoffman was then pulled for freshman Lauren Weldy, who was called upon to close the game.

But the Lobos didn't want to go down easy as Mariah Rimmer singled and Jasmine Casados – the Mountain West Player of the Week – tripled down the right field line to tie the game.

The Titans recorded 11 hits in the game as Christa McGahuey led the charge finishing 3-for-4 a the plate with one RBI, while Kostich, Julia Maksym and Katelyn Steffel each recorded two hits. Hoffman also had one hit and finished with three runs scored.

Detroit will stay in New Mexico on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Lobos with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET at the Lobo Softball Field.
