DAYTON, Ohio (4/1/2014) -- Senior
Julia Maksym and junior
Kayla Kostich each took one out of the park as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped a pair of games at Dayton on Tuesday.
Detroit (2-20) fell in game one, 11-6, and then 7-3 in the nightcap.
Sophomore
Katy Severson was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader with two doubles, two runs scored and a RBI. Kostich had two hits with the homer, three runs scored and a RBI, while senior
Katelyn Steffel was 5-for-7 with a run and a RBI.
The Titans started the scoring in game one right in the first frame as Kostich lifted a pitch to left field and the wind did the rest for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore
Christa McGahuey followed with a walk and a single by Steffel gave Detroit runners on first and second with two down. McCarty then hit a RBI single to right for a 2-0 lead. UDM would load the bases, but just could not push across another run.
Dayton (14-17) answered with a pair of solo shots in the second and then added four runs in the third to jump out in front, 6-2. Kostich started another rally in the fifth with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. McGahuey then ripped a RBI double to left center to make it 6-3 and she would later come around to score on a Dayton error and the Titans were within 6-4. The rally continued as the red, white and blue loaded the bases again with just one out, but just could not come up with the big hit.
The Flyers would break the game open with a five spot in the bottom of the sixth, but the Titans didn't go quietly as Maksym connected on a two-run blast in the seventh to make the final 11-6.
Kostich and McGahuey each finished game one 1-for-3 with a run batted in and two runs scored. Hoffman was 2-for-4 with a walk, while Severson and senior
Hannah Klenk each tallied a pair of hits.
In game two, the Flyers got off to a fast start with four runs in the first, taking advantage of two Titan miscues in the field.
Detroit got one back in the third as a double steal attempt resulted in Severson scoring from third, but Dayton answered with three in the bottom half of the inning.
The fighting Titans clawed back with a pair in the fourth as Steffel drove in Kostich with a single to right. The red-hot Severson then brought her home with a double to left center and Detroit trailed 7-3, but that was as close as the Titans would come.
Junior
Kat Hoffman pitched four scoreless innings in game two, scattering five hits with three strikeouts, while Steffel and Severson were each 2-for-3.
Detroit will be right back on the field tomorrow as the Titans play a doubleheader at Michigan in a schedule change announced earlier today. UDM will face No. 6 Michigan at 6:00 p.m., and then battle Toledo at 8:00 p.m., at the Michigan Softball Complex.
