Christa McGahuey's fly ball to right field wasn't deep enough as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team's rally came up short in a 9-8 loss to Wright State in the series finale on Sunday at Buysse Ballpark.
Wright State (10-25, 6-4 HL) led 9-5 entering the bottom half of the seventh inning before the Titans scored three runs on five hits, including back-to-back doubles from freshman
Lauren Weldy – her first collegiate hit – and senior
Alyssa Gietl to make it a one run game.
Detroit (4-30, 0-6 HL) scored one run in the first inning and four more in the second, including a two run double to right center from
Katy Severson to give the Titans a 5-0 lead.
The Raiders would answer back with one run in the third inning, before scoring five more in the fourth, including a grand slam from Angie Clark, to give Wright State a 6-5 lead.
The score would stay the same until the Raiders added three more runs on four hits in the sixth inning to build a 9-5 lead.
Julia Maksym started in the circle for Detroit and pitched four innings giving up five earned runs while striking out three. Weldy came on in relief and went three innings with two earned runs and two strikeouts.

Kayla Kostich finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored and wrapped up the weekend series hitting .583 (7-for-12) from the dish.
Detroit will visit Bowling Green for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 16 with the first game scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Meserve Field.
