JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (4/15/2014) --
The weather hasn't really been a friend of the Titans all year so why start now as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team's final round of the Red Flash Invitational was cancelled on Tuesday.

The cancellation means that the Titans finish the year taking fourth in the event with a 612 (311-301), just a few strokes shy of third place. The 301 in the second round was one of the best scores in the tournament with four UDM players posting scores in the 70's at the Par 70, 6,880-yard Sunnehanna Country Club.

"The greens were very tough, but I can't complain with the work these guys are putting in," said head coach Mark Engel.

Freshman Kyle Gaines kept up his impressive rookie campaign by tying for 10th with 150 as his consistent play led him to shoot a 76 on the opening 18 and a 74 in the second round. It was his second-straight top-12 finish and he also played the long 5's to an even par 5.00 average, one of the best marks in the field.

"Kyle was very consistent in both rounds and as a freshman, he keeps getting better," added Coach Engel.

Senior Brendan Leonard tied for 21st with a 154 after carding a 78 in round one and a 76 in round two, while also collecting a team-high five birdies, tied for the fourth most among the competition.

Sophomore Wil Wittmann shared 24th with a 156 total (80-76) and also had an even par 5.00 average on the course's Par 5's.

Freshman Spencer Lendzion shot an 83 in round one, but turned that around for a 75 in round two for a 158 total, tying for 28th, while sophomore Josh Shaw placed 32nd with a 159 (77-82) scorecard.

"I know that Lenny wants a few putts back, but it was tough putting for everyone," said Coach Engel. "I was very happy with Spencer and if you look at his last round at Colleton and the last two tournaments, he has given us a lot of good scores."

The Titans knocked in 19 birdies, the second most in the event, and 84 pars and finished in the top four in Par 3 (+18, 3.36) and Par 5 scoring (+7, 5.23).

A chance at a title is on deck for the Titans as they get ready for the Horizon League Championship next week, April 25-27, at the El Campeon Course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. Detroit owns the most championships in league history with seven with its last coming in 2010.
