Grand Slam Lifts BGSU Past Titans

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (4/16/14) – The Titans took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning before Erika Stratton hit a walk-off grand slam to help lift Bowling Green past the University of Detroit Mercy softball team 7-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Falcons went on to win the nightcap 2-0 at Meserve Field.

In the first game, Bowling Green (18-21-1) took an early 2-0 lead after scoring one run in both the second a third inning.

Detroit (4-32) then answered back with three runs on four hits, including a double from Katelyn Steffel followed by three RBI singles from Lauren Weldy, Alyssa Gietl and Grace Schmeiser, in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

The Falcons would then tie the score in the bottom of the fourth following a sacrifice fly from Haley Schrock. Before the Titans reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning off an RBI double from Weldy, her second in as many games.

Detroit would take that lead to the bottom of the seventh before the Falcons were able to load the bases with a single and two fielder's choices before Stratton ended the game with one swing of the bat.

In the nightcap, senior Julia Maksym pitched six solid innings of work only giving up two earned runs, but the Titans failed to score after leaving 10 runners on base. Detroit recorded eight hits compared to six for BGSU in the game, including at least one in each of the first six innings, but that was all the Falcons would allow as three pitchers combined to record the shutout.

Schmeiser and Karyn McCarty both finished the day with four hits apiece for the Titans, while Steffel and Weldy recorded both recorded three, respectively. Junior Kayla Kostich finished the day with two hits - one in each game – to extend her hitting streak to seven-straight games, while Weldy has now hit in four-straight games after recording her first collegiate hit over the weekend against Wright State.

The Titans will get right back into the Horizon League play as they visit UIC this weekend for a three-game series in the Windy City, before hosting Green Bay on April, 24 for a doubleheader at Buysse Ballpark.
