Box Score 2 CHICAGO (4/18/14) – Junior
Kayla Kostich extended her hitting streak to nine-straight games, while senior
Julia Maksym drove in three runs but it wasn't enough as UIC used a walk-off home run from Laura Swan to win the nightcap 7-6 Friday at Flames Field. The Flames also won the first game 6-3.
In the nightcap, UIC (12-19, 6-5) took an early 2-0 lead off a two-run homer from Jenna Marsalli in the bottom of the first inning, before Maksym settled down and was able to keep the Flames scoreless for the next two innings. She then drove in the Titans first run with a single down the left field line in the top of the fourth to make it a 2-1 game.
UIC answered back with another run in the bottom half of the fourth inning to go back up by two 3-1, before the Titans bats came to life in the fifth inning for five runs on four hits. The first three Titans up got on base with a walk and two singles, before
Katy Severson drove in the first run with a single up the middle to make the score 3-2.
With the bases still loaded and two outs
Christa McGahuey came through with a clutch two-run double to right field to give Detroit (4-34, 0-8) its first lead of the day 4-3. After a UIC pitching change Maksym came up with two outs and was able to drive in two more runs with a single to give the Titans a 6-3 lead.
Four of the Titans five runs in the fifth inning came with two outs.
But the Flames wouldn't go out without a fight and were able to score one run in the bottom of the fifth, before adding two more on in the sixth and Swan's home run in the seventh to win the game.
Maksym started in the circle for Detroit and threw 4.1 innings giving up seven hits and four earned runs, while also hitting a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI.
In the first game, UIC scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning as it looked like the Flames might run away it, before
Lauren Weldy was able to cool them off with two scoreless innings.
In the fourth inning
Alyssa Gietl was able to bring home two Titans after an error by the left fielder to make the score 3-2. But that was as close as the score would get before the Flames answered back with three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
Weldy would drive in the Titans final run in the top of the sixth with a single down the right field line to make the final 6-3.
Weldy pitched six innings giving up nine hits and three earned runs in the loss, while striking out five.
The Titans will get right back at it as they face UIC for the series finale tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET at Flames Field.
