Julia Maksym went the distance and the Titans turned a couple of Toledo mistakes into runs as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team raced past the Rockets, 5-2, on Wednesday at the Wilpon Softball Complex in Ann Arbor.
Detroit (3-21) started the day with a 10-0 loss to No. 5 Michigan as the red, white and blue played both games at the home of the Wolverines.
Maksym allowed just six hits and struck out two batters in seven innings against Toledo, while also going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Senior
Karyn McCarty and sophomore
Katy Severson each went 1-for-3 with a RBI and run scored and McCarty also stole home.
The game was tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when the Titans scored three runs with two outs. Junior
Kayla Kostich started things off with a single to right and moved to second on an error. She was on third with two outs when Severson drove her in on a single. McCarty then belted one over the center fielders head for a RBI double as Severson hustled home. After an infield hit by Maksym put runners on first and third, UDM played small ball with a double steal and McCarty bolted for home and a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Toledo had runners on first and third with one out, but junior
Sam Henderson was able to gun out the runner at second stealing without anyone scoring and Maksym induced a ground out to end the game.
It was a scoreless contest after two when the Titans put single runs up in the third and fourth. Maksym started that rally with a leadoff triple off the left field wall, and with one out, junior
Kat Hoffman was able to bring her home on an infield single.
In the fourth, the Titans used a couple of Toledo (11-20) miscues to score as sophomore
Christa McGahuey reached on an error. Walk-on senior
Abby McCollum – who is playing her fourth varsity sport at Detroit – came in and the former soccer standout stole second. Senior
Katelyn Steffel then attempted to bunt her to third, but Toledo threw the ball away and McCollum came around to score for a 2-0 lead.
The Rockets would use a pair of Detroit errors to score two runs in the fifth, but Maksym ended up pitching out of the jam and stranding the go-ahead run in scoring position with just one out.
In game one versus No. 5 Michigan (26-6), Detroit battled a nationally-ranked opponent for the fourth time this season as it played No. 3 Arizona State twice and No. 19 Minnesota. It was also UDM's fourth game against a Big Ten school with the Golden Gophers and a doubleheader against Wisconsin.
The Titans had two walks in the game courtesy of Hoffman and McGahuey, but the Wolverines built an early lead en route to the victory.
Detroit will now look to finally start Horizon League action as the Titans play a three game series at Valparaiso this weekend, with a doubleheader on Saturday and the series finale on Sunday.
