Titans Late Inning Rally Falls Short Against Green Bay

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DETROIT (4/24/14) – Junior Kayla Kostich extended her hitting streak to 12-straight games and sophomore Christa McGahuey hit her team leading eighth home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped both games to Green Bay on Thursday in a midday doubleheader at Buysse Ballpark.

The Phoenix used an eighth inning home run from Miranda Reinke to take the first game 3-2, before for holding on for a 7-6 win in the second game after the Titans loaded the bases and scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In the first game, Detroit (5-36, 1-10) took an early 1-0 lead after McGahuey blasted her eighth home run of the season to straightaway center field in the first inning.

Green Bay would get on the board in the third inning after Allie Taylor was able to score from third base on a passed ball. Taylor led off the inning with Green Bay's first hit and advanced to third on back-to-back sacrifice bunts.

The Titans would respond with a run in the bottom half of the inning after an RBI single to center field from Kostich, which brought home Kat Hoffman from second. Hoffman led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt from Hannah Klenk.

Lauren Weldy would then keep Green Bay scoreless for the next three innings, before the Phoenix were able tie the game in the top of the seventh on an error and another passed ball.

Reinke then hit a home run in the top of the eighth to give Green Bay its first lead of the day 3-2.

Detroit would put runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, before Taylor was able to grab a hard hit line drive down the third base line off the bat of Hoffman to end the game.

Weldy pitched a complete game scattering six hits with one earned run while striking out six in eight innings.

In the nightcap, Green Bay used a pair of two run homers from Shannon Butts and Katelyn Huemmer in the fourth and fifth innings to break open a scoreless tie and build a 4-0 lead.

Detroit then took advantage of a Phoenix fielding error to score three runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a two run single from senior Julia Maksym, to trim Green Bay's lead to 4-3.

The Phoenix then used a two out rally of three-straight singles in the sixth inning to score another run to build a 5-3 lead.

Katelyn Steffel then responded in the bottom of the sixth with her second home run of the season – a solo shot down the left field line – to make the score 5-4 heading into the seventh.

The Phoenix then continued on with the home run derby as Reinke and Marissa Michalkiewcz hit back-to-back shots to give Green Bay a 7-4 lead.

But Detroit wasn't going to go down easy as the first four Titans got on base in the bottom of the seventh, including an RBI single from McGahuey to make the score 7-5. After a Green Bay pitching change and a pair of outs the Titans still had the basses loaded when Steffel kept the rally alive with an RBI single to center field to make the score 7-6. Freshman Meg Tarrance then came up and was able to work the count to 3-2 before flying out to left field to end the game.

The Titans will continue Horizon League play as they host Cleveland State this weekend for a three-game series at Buysse Ballpark. The first pitch on Saturday is scheduled for noon.
