Kayla Kostich extended her hitting streak to 15-straight games, but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team dropped its series finale to Cleveland State 7-1 on Sunday at Buysse Ballpark.
Kostich finished the day 1-for-3 to extend her hitting streak to 15 games, while freshman
Grace Schmeiser also finished 1-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Titans.
Cleveland State (24-15, 8-5) took advantage of a throwing error in the first inning to score two runs, before Detroit (5-39, 1-13) was able to make up a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single to right field off the bat of Schmeiser.
The Titans then had an opportunity to tie or take the lead in bottom of the third and fourth innings, but base running miscues kept the Vikings in the lead 2-1.
Cleveland State then took advantage of another Detroit error in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 3-1, before adding on four more runs in the top of the seventh on a pair of home runs from Cynthia Woodard and Erica McNew to help secure the win.
Freshman
Lauren Weldy started in the circle for Detroit and went six innings giving up six hits and one earned run while fanning five, before the Vikings scored four runs on five hits in the seventh inning.
The Titans will continue Horizon League play with a trip to Oakland on Tuesday, April 29 for a doubleheader. The first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the OU Softball Field.
