Box Score 2 VALPARAISO, Ind. (4/5/2014) -- The Titans waited a couple of extra weeks, but conference play has arrived as the University of Detroit Mercy softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader at Valparaiso on Saturday at the VU Softball Field.
Junior
Kayla Kostich had a pair of hits on the day, while seniors
Karyn McCarty and
Katelyn Steffel each had a base knock.
In game one, it was scoreless through two when Valparaiso (10-23, 4-2 HL) – the two-time defending Horizon League champions – connected on a two-run homerun in the third. The Crusaders added another run in the fourth and three in the fifth as they took the contest, 6-0.
In game two, Valpo once again started the scoring with a two run shot in the first and the home team went on to a 9-0 victory.
Freshman
Lauren Weldy put in a great effort in the circle as she combined to pitch four scoreless innings in the two games. She struck out two and allowed just three hits in two innings in game one and then had another strikeout and did not allow a hit retiring all six batters she faced in a pair of innings in the nightcap.
The final game of the series will take place tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (EST) and can be seen live on the Horizon League Network.
