Katy Severson was feeling pretty good after hitting her first collegiate homer so she went for another on Tuesday as the University of Detroit Mercy softball finally played a home series hosting IPFW in a doubleheader at Buysse Ballpark.
The Titans pitched a great game in the first dropping a 2-0 decision before falling in the second game, 13-4.
In game one, IPFW (27-10) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead coming up with a rally with a runner on first and two outs. A walk put runners on first and second and back-to-back hits gave the Mastodons a 2-0 advantage. The damage could have been worse, but Severson started a great relay throwing it in from left field where shortstop
Kayla Kostich fielded the ball and fired it home to gun out another IPFW run.
Junior
Kat Hoffman would settle down after that throwing a complete game and allowing just six hits – four after the first – and striking out three batters in the hard-luck loss.
Detroit had a chance to score in the first with runners on first and second and just one down thanks to a pair of walks, but UDM could not come up with a hit. The Titans only other runner was in the sixth as senior
Hannah Klenk singled to left.
In game two, Detroit (3-26) struck in the opening frame as Hoffman and Klenk started the bottom of the first with two-straight singles. Kostich then went to go sacrifice the runners to scoring position, but her bunt was thrown away as the Titans took a 1-0 lead. With runners on second and third and two outs, senior
Karyn McCarty was able to drive in another run on a RBI single through the left side and the red, white and blue led 2-0.
The Mastodons got one back in the second on a long ball and then scored nine in the fourth to open a 10-2 advantage.
That is when Severson went to work at the plate leading off the fourth and drilling one to center field on a 1-0 count. Her second homer of the game came in the sixth as she powered a 1-1 pitch to deep right center and off the center fielder's glove and over the fence.
Hoffman and Klenk each ended game two 1-for-3 with a run scored, while freshman
Grace Schmeiser was 1-for-2 and made her first two career starts at third base in the twinbill.
The Titans will turn around and play another doubleheader tomorrow as Detroit welcomes Davenport into Buysse Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
