DETROIT (4/9/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy softball team rallied in the bottom of the sixth for two runs to win game one, 8-7, as the Titans hosted Davenport in a doubleheader on Wednesday at Buysse Ballpark. UDM fell in game two, 13-2.
Sophomore
Katy Severson continued her hot hitting going 3-for-4 at the plate with another home run and a career-high five RBI in the first game, while sophomore
Christa McGahuey was 2-for-3 with a homer and a pair of RBI. Severson and McGahuey are now tied for the team lead with 12 RBI and McGahuey also tops the team with five homers.
The Titans (4-27) trailed 7-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth - after a four-run spot by Davenport (22-6) in the fifth - as junior
Kat Hoffman worked a leadoff walk. She then moved to second with two outs on fly to center field from junior
Kayla Kostich and Severson was able to drive her in with a double to left center on a 3-2 pitch. McGahuey then followed with a RBI single up the middle to give Detroit the lead.
In the seventh, Hoffman was able to retire the Panthers to earn her third win of the campaign.
Detroit trailed 2-0 heading into the third when it struck for four runs. Hoffman started that with a single and then senior
Hannah Klenk was able to reach on a walk. With one out, Severson wasted no time swinging on the first pitch and she got a hold of one, launching it out to left field for her third home run in the last two days and the Titans had a 3-2 lead. The next batter was McGahuey and on a 1-0 pitch, she went the other way powering one to right field for back-to-back jacks and a 4-2 advantage.
After the Panthers got one back in the fourth, Hoffman once again was the rally starter as she had a one-out single and then stole second. With two outs, Kostich doubled to center to make it 5-3 and after she stole third, Severson knocked her in with another double to put the red, white and blue up by three, 6-3.
Hoffman finished with her first career three hit game and was on base all four times she was up going 3-for-3 with a walk and a career-best three runs scored, while also striking out four in the circle.
The Titans posted 10 hits in the first contest of the twinbill with a season-high five doubles and also collected five walks.
In game two, Davenport – ranked No. 21 in the NAIA – jumped out in front with three runs in the first and had a 9-0 lead when the Titans chipped away with two runs in the fourth.
Klenk and freshman
Grace Schmeiser walked with one out and then the two executed a double steal. An error on a Hoffman batted ball would score Klenk and then freshman
Meg Tarrance ripped a double for her first collegiate RBI to make it 9-2.
That was as close as the Titans would get with the Panthers closing the game out by scoring four more in the fifth.
Kostich and McGahuey were both 1-for-3 in the nightcap, while senior
Julia Maksym and junior
Vanessa Garcia each had a hit.
The Titans will now move back into conference play as they open a three-game series against Wright State this weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. Both days will have first pitch at Noon at Buysse Ballpark.
