Softball Sweeps Oakland; Kostich Extends Hitting Streak

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ROCHESTER, Mich. (5/2/14) – Junior Kayla Kostich extended her hitting streak to 17-straight games, including a single, double, and triple to help the University of Detroit Mercy softball team sweep new Horizon League rival Oakland on Friday at the OU Softball Field. The Titans took the first game 2-1, before completing the sweep with a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.

Kostich finished the day with four hits - including three in the nightcap to almost hit for the cycle – to extend her hitting streak to 17 games. Over the current streak she is hitting .416 (25-for-60) with five RBI and nine runs scored. She has also improved her overall batting average by 56 points from .292 to .348.

In the first game, both teams were held hitless until Kostich singled up the middle in the top of the fourth inning and scoreless until Oakland (15-21, 4-7) scored the first run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

Detroit (7-39, 3-13) then took advantage of a couple Golden Grizzlies fielding errors along with some timely hits to take a 2-1 lead. Katy Severson and Karyn McCarty both recorded hits to start the seventh inning, while Alyssa Geitl and Kostich each drove in a run, including the game-winning run with two outs.

Freshman Lauren Weldy pitched a complete game for the Titans scattering five hits with one earned run, and two strikeouts.

In the nightcap, senior Julia Maksym picked up right where Weldy left off by pitching another complete game for the Titans, while at the plate Detroit recorded 11 hits – including three from Kostich – to claim its first Horizon League sweep since beating Wright State in a pair of games in 2011.

Maksym finished her day in the circle only giving up two hits, one earned run, and striking out three for the win, while Kostich finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk, single, double and triple.

The Titans scored one run in the opening frame after and RBI double from Katelyn Steffel, before adding on two more runs in the third inning on a two run single from Severson.

Oakland was able to get one run back in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 3-1, but that was as close as it would get as Christa McGahuey and McCarty both went long in the top of the seventh to make the final 6-1. McGahuey hit a solo homer run – her ninth of the season – to lead off the inning, while McCarty hit a two run homer three batters later to seal the win.

The Titans will conclude Horizon League play when they host Youngstown State for a three-game series this weekend. The first two games will be played on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for noon at Buysse Ballpark. There will also be a Senior Day ceremony held in between the two games on Saturday.
