Day One Results
EAST LANSING, Mich. (9/13/2014) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team might have been short in numbers, but the Titans battled their way to three wins in the first day of play at the Spartan Invitational on Saturday.
The event, hosted by Michigan State, has Detroit, IPFW and Toledo in the field as they competed at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Detroit earned two wins in singles and another in doubles in its matches against the Rockets, Mastodons and Spartans. Junior
Nino Sujashvili led the way with a singles and doubles win, while junior
Irina Slizovskaya picked up the other singles tally.
Sujashvili recorded her singles win with a 6-4, 7-6 (6) score over MSU's Allie Baer at No. 4 and also teamed up with sophomore
Anna Davydova to post a dominating 8-3 triumph over IPFW's Emily Richardson and Alina Schibol.
Meanwhile, Slizovskaya cruised in her singles win at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1, against Toledo's Katelyn Nguyen.
Detroit was in the mix for several other triumphs, but just could not push ahead. Against Toledo, Sujashvili and sophomore
Viktoria Laskutova were upended in three sets as Sujashvili fell in a heartbreaker 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (5), while Laskutova was edged 5-7, 7-6 (3), 2-6.
In the match-up with Michigan State, Slizovskaya had the early lead in a 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, setback and Davydova also won her first set in a 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, loss.
The final day of play is set to begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m., as the Titans will take on Toledo and Michigan State in doubles and IPFW in singles.
