BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (9/20/2014) -- Sophomore
Anna Davydova won the No. 3 flight and the University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team posted a perfect 6-0 mark in singles on the day as the Bowling Green Invitational came to an end on Saturday.
All six Titans won their singles matches and Detroit added another two tallies in doubles play.
"Overall, it was an interesting tournament with the strongest Horizon League teams participating in Cleveland State, UIC, and Youngstown State, which has never happened before," said head coach
Pjotrs Necajevs '10. "We had a strong performance without having a full line-up, but we still have lots of things to work on, especially in doubles play. I am very thankful to our administration by believing in us and adding more resources to our program.
Annie Moore '09 is now an assistant coach for the women's program only and that makes a big difference on the court having another coach. She is a big help on the court and now with her help, we can do twice as much to improve our players."
Davydova continued what she started yesterday by capturing the No. 3 flight with a 6-3, 6-4 straight-set victory over Cincinnati's Lauren Bellinger. In her three singles matches on the weekend, Davydova didn't drop a set and had to go to a tiebreaker just once.
"Anna struggled a bit in almost every match, mostly against herself, but she was able to be disciplined with her objectives through out each match," said coach Necajevs. "It is only her second semester at school since she came here last January and she earned a title as a young player."
Junior
Nino Sujashvili was victorious in her match to take third place at the No. 2 flight. Sujashvili had no trouble with IPFW's Carlota Trevino in recording a 6-0, 6-1 triumph.
Juniors
Irina Slizovskaya and
Valeryia Kulikovskaya each won their match to finish in fifth place. Slizovskaya defeated Toledo's Pia Rygh in convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1, while Kulikovskaya tallied a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Alina Schibol of IPFW.
Sophomore
Viktoria Laskutova won her bout against Youngstown State's Victoria Ferry, 6-3, 6-2, to take seventh in the No. 5 flight, and sophomore
Nynke Van Der Goot picked up her first Titan win going the distance in an exciting 7-5, 0-6, 10-8 victory over Cincinnati's Natalia Abdalla at No. 6.
"Irina, Lera (Valeryia) and Nino all had strong performances in singles. I see a lot of tendencies in Irina and Nino performing on a high level and they are still not in their best shape and we have more big performances to anticipate," Coach Necajevs said. "Lera and Vika (Viktoria) was able to break through and build their confidence by closing the last couple matches, and our transfer Nynke came through in a tough match after a difficult week dealing with injuries to get an exciting win in her first singles match as a Titan."
In No. 1 doubles, Sujashvili and Slizovskaya tallied two wins as the Detroit tandem surged past Cleveland State's Victoria Bensimon and Aleksandra Golawska, 8-7 (4) and then downed Bowling Green's Harley Hutchison and Madison Adams, 8-2.
"We changed our preparation routine this year and so far it is working really well. We changed it to improve our performance in singles and we adjusted our recovery routine to keep the team fresh and injury free," added Coach Necajevs.
The Titans will now have a couple of weeks to get ready for the Rocket Invite hosted by Toledo from Oct. 3-4.
