WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing squad opened the dual meet portion of its schedule on Saturday (Jan. 17), competing against six other teams at the Army Duals.
Detroit earned one victory and two ties, finishing the day 1-3-2 overall. Detroit earned a 13-11 victory over Hunter and also tallied a pair of 12-12 ties against Lafayette College and Community College of New York (CCNY). The Titans dropped a close dual match to host Army (13-11) and also fell in matches to Swarthmore (16-11), and Stevens (24-3).
Senior
Kaylah Berndt went 12-4 to lead the Detroit epee team, which totaled 23 of Detroit's 38 total bout wins at the Army Duals. Berndt won four of the five matches that were decided by one touch. Junior
Roby Wong added seven bout wins for the epee team, while freshman
Erica Burgess tallied four bout victories in her first collegiate dual meet.

Katie Lang and sophomore
McKenna Brohl earned a combined 12 triumphs for Detroit in the sabre. Lang finished the day 7-3, while Brohl had a 5-5 mark in the weapon. As a sabre team, the pair earned four victories over other schools.

Mary Colombo earned two bout victories for the Titans, while freshman foilist
Nicole Fitch added another victory in her first collegiate dual meet.
The Army Duals were the first of two weekend duals for the Titans in New York. Detroit also competed on Sunday at the Vassar College Duals in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
