YPSILANTI, Mich. (1/24/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team did something that it has never done before – beat Eastern Michigan – as the Titans came back to defeat the Eagles, 4-3, on Saturday at the Chippewa Club.
The Titans were 0-20 all-time against EMU coming into the match and it looked bleak after dropping the doubles point, but Detroit fought back to even its record to 2-2 on the season. The Eagles fell to 0-2 on the year.
In singles, it was once again the back end of the line-up coming up with some strong wins as the red, white and blue claimed No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 on the day.
It came down to the final singles match for the triumph and sophomore
Nynke Van Der Goot did not disappoint as she rallied past Maria Paula Ribero, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2, at five singles for the clinching fourth point.
In the other singles bouts, junior
Irina Slizovskaya cruised to a straight-set, 6-1, 6-1, victory in the third position, while sophomore
Viktoria Laskutova downed Remu Sharma, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6.
Sophomore
Anna Davydova then evened the team score at 3-3 as she held off Daphne Friedrichs, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 4, putting it all in the good hands of Van Der Goot.
Detroit will have a few days off before returning to the courts next week when the Titans battle Western Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 31, and nationally-ranked Tennessee on Sunday, Feb. 1, with both matches taking place in Kalamazoo.
