DETROIT (1/25/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing team hosted its annual UDM Invitational home fencing dual meet Sunday at historic Calihan Hall and the Titans finished 1-2 overall as a team, earning a victory over Oakland University.
Detroit also faced fencing squads from the University of Michigan and Michigan State. The Titans earned a 17-9 triumph over Oakland, as both the foil and the epee earned wins as weapons. UDM dropped duals to Michigan State by a score of 16-11 and also fell to Michigan 23-4.
Every Detroit fencer earned at least two victories and senior epeeist
Kaylah Berndt led the team overall with a 7-2 record. Berndt posted a 3-0 mark against Michigan State and tallied 2-1 victories against both Michigan and Oakland.
Also in the epee, junior
Roby Wong tallied a 5-4 mark, while freshman
Erica Burgess posted two victories for the Titans.
Senior
Katie Lang led the women's sabre squad with five victories, including two each against Oakland and MSU. Sophomore
McKenna Brohl tallied two victories on the day for the Titans in the sabre.
UDM senior
Mary Colombo and freshman
Nicole Fitch each posted 3-5 marks for the Titans in the foil. The pair each went undefeated against Oakland, posting 2-0 marks against OU.
The Titans return competitively next weekend, fencing at the Northwestern Duals on Saturday, Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 1 in Evanston, Ill.
