KALAMAZOO, Mich. (1/31/2015) -- Junior
Valeryia Kulikovskaya and sophomore
Anna Davydova picked up singles wins, but it wasn't enough for the University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team as the Titans dropped a 5-2 battle at Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
Detroit (2-3) started the day losing the doubles point as Western Michigan (2-2) claimed No. 2 and No. 3 by 6-2 scores.
Both Kulikovskaya and Davydova went to three sets before pulling out a pair of thrilling victories.
Kulikovskaya started off slow at No. 3 singles losing the first set, 6-1, but was then able to rally, 7-6 (5), and bring the match to a third set. She then took command from the very start of that one and won the final frame, 6-2.
Davydova's match at No. 4 was a nailbiter all the way as she lost 7-6 (4) in the first and won 6-4 in the third. The final set went back and forth before the Titan won the last two points to surge ahead in the tiebreaker, 11-9.
