Titans Tennis Hosts First ITA Campus Showdown

DETROIT, Mich. (10/12/15) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's tennis teams hosted the first ever Intercollegiate Tennis Association "Campus Showdown" on the Titans Tennis Courts over the weekend.

Campus Showdowns are promoted by the ITA and are formatted as one-day tournaments that take place on college campuses across America. The showdowns are open to juniors, college players, professionals and adults.  The tournaments give junior players a unique chance to check out the collegiate experience and skill level.

"I am very happy with the turnout for the campus showdown," head coach Aaron Paajanen said. "It was great to offer something that not only showcased our facilities and players, but also gave younger players a taste of college competition and strengthened our program's ties to the surrounding tennis community."

The Titans hosted the men's showdown on Saturday, Oct. 10, followed by a women's showdown on Sunday, Oct. 11. Tennis players of all ages and skill abilities were in attendance on each day, with ages ranging from 14-40.

"I was very impressed with the talent level of the players who came out," Paajanen elaborated. "The matchups and players were very good. Many of them will be in college uniforms in the future."

Both men's and women's tennis teams return to action on Thursday, Oct. 22, for the start of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships. The regional runs through Monday, Oct. 26 and will conclude the fall season for Titans tennis.
