Full Results

BUFFALO, N.Y. (10/17/2015) --
The University of Detroit Mercy women's cross country team recorded six runners under the 20-minute barrier for the second-straight week as the Titans ended the regular season at the Canisius Alumni Classic on Saturday.

Detroit placed fifth in the 5k race held at Delaware Park as the red, white and blue posted 130 points.

Junior Samantha Zakalowski was the top Titan for the second-straight race as she took 30th in 19:16.

Senior Zeinab Baydoun ran a season-best 19:22 for 35th, while sophomore Taylor Smith was just behind her in 37th place with a run of 19:26.

The race was the last regular season event for Detroit as it will look for its third-straight title when the red, white and blue next competes in the Horizon League Championship on Halloween, Oct. 31, at the Elvin R King Cross Country Course in Cedarville, Ohio.

THE FINISH LINE
BACK IN FRONT
  • Samantha Zakalowski led the team for the first time in her career at Louisville two weeks ago and she did not hand over that crown to anyone topping the team again.
  • Her 19:16 time was 1:38 better than her 20:54 run on the same course last season.

GETTING BACK TO FORM
  • Zeinab Baydoun returned to the team mid-season and she is starting to pick up where she left off last season recording a sub-20 for the second-straight race.
  • Her time of 19:22 was a season low by 33 seconds as she went from a 21:06 at the National Catholic Championship to 199:55 at Louisville to this current mark.

ANOTHER UNDER 20 DASH
  • Taylor Smith has now posted under 20 times in all six of her collegiate 5k races.

WELCOME BACK
  • Haley Morairty has dealt with a few injuries in her career, but she made her season debut today clocking a 21:17.
  • It was her first race since last year's Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational.

MEET WRAP-UP
  • "We had a nice pack and the women had a good run here today, making progress against a Canisius team we faced at the National Catholic Championship back in September. Samantha (Zakalowski) continues to run well, and Zeinab (Baydoun) is rounding back into form at the right time for us." - Guy Murray '89 – Director of Track & Field and Cross Country

UP NEXT
  • The post-season begins with the Horizon League Championship as the conference will host its annual race on Halloween, Oct. 31, at the Elvin R King Cross Country Course in Cedarville, Ohio. Wright State will serve as the championship host.
