EVANSTON, Ill. (2/22/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's fencing squad placed 15th as a team on Saturday at the 2015 Midwest Fencing Conference Championships, which were held at the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion on the campus of Northwestern University.
Detroit finished with 305 points overall in the women's team standings to place 15th out of 22 teams. Ohio State placed first on the women's side.
Senior
Katie Lang and sophomore
McKenna Brohl led the Titans past Chicago State, 5-1, in its first dual of the day for the sabre squad. The Titans dropped their next match when pitted against top-seeded Northwestern in the sabre. Lang and Brohl each earned two bout victories in the weapon for Detroit.
In the women's epee, the Titans were seeded No. 13 entering competition and fell to No. 3 Michigan in the first round, 5-3. The Titans pulled to within 4-3 after senior
Kaylah Berndt won a 5-4 bout, but Michigan was able to secure the match-clinching victory in the next bout. Junior
Roby Wong earned two victories for Detroit in the epee.
Christina Powers earned two victories and senior
Mary Colombo added another bout win for Detroit in the foil, where the squad fell in its only match to Minnesota, 5-3.
Several Titans will be competed at the NCAA Midwest Fencing Regionals on March 7-8 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
