DETROIT (2/24/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team has been hard at work the last few weeks in practice and the Titans will now get ready to return to action as UDM travels to The Prairie State for an event hosted by Chicago State.
The Titans will play three matches this weekend in Homewood, Illinois, at the H-F Racquet Club. The red, white and blue will meet Northern Kentucky on Friday, Feb. 27, Northern Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 28 and Chicago State on Sunday, March 1.
The Titans are 3-5 on the season, but three of those losses came at the hands of ranked programs in Notre Dame, Tennessee and Michigan State. UDM has three wins over MAC teams in Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan and Toledo.
Sophomore
Anna Davydova leads the squad with 12 singles wins and 20 overall victories as she is among the HL leaders in both categories. Junior
Irina Slizovskaya has eight singles wins playing in the top end of the line-up, while sophomore
Viktoria Laskutova and junior
Valeryia Kulikovskaya have tallied six and five wins, respectively.
Northern Kentucky is 1-4 on the year with a victory over Southeast Missouri State and losses to IPFW, Dayton, Kentucky and Louisville. NKU was 7-16 overall and 0-8 in the Atlantic Sun as the Norse begin just their third year of full Division I status.
Northern Iowa is 8-3 on the season heading into the weekend event and will play Chicago State to open things up. UNI has won six in a row – all at home – and has victories over two other Horizon League teams in Milwaukee (4-3) and Wright State (5-2). The Panthers are led by Gisela Kemper, who is 17-7 on the year. Elvira Lopez is 16-8, 7-3 at No. 2, and Jieke Stroobant is 15-8 in singles play.
Chicago State comes into the event at 2-8 overall with a 7-0 loss to Wright State on its ledger.
