SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (3/17/2015) --
Sophomore Spencer Lendzion carded a career low and the Titans totaled their 12th best 54-hole score in school history as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team ended competition at the Third Annual Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.

The event was held on the Par-72, 6,928-yard Sevierville Golf Club's River Course.

Detroit posted a 291 on Tuesday to finish with an 870 (293-286-291), tying for sixth place with Eastern Kentucky and just three strokes out of fifth and four behind fourth. Jacksonville State won the event with an 852, while Southern Illinois and Murray State tied for second (861), West Georgia was fourth (866) and host Tennessee Tech claimed fifth (867).

"This team is deep and we have several players that can go out there and play well and lead us," said head coach Luke LaFave '02. "It is still early in the year and we have really only played for a few weeks so far so I believe we will only get better."

The 870 was the best 54-hole score since tallying an 869 at the 2013 Cleveland State Invitational. It also was a 35-shot improvement from the 905 is had on the course last season.

Junior Wil Wittmann recorded his 12th career top-20 finish and fourth straight by sharing 15th with a 216 (69-69-78). He had the team's only eagle as well as the second most pars on the squad racking up 37 and was among the field's leaders in Par 3 (2.92, -1) and Par 4 (4.00, E) scoring.

Lendzion was at his game on the final round with a 3-under 69, besting his previous low by two shots from the 71 he had in the first round of the 2014 Horizon League Championship. He would end up with a career-low 218 (74-75-69), tying for 24th. He also knocked in a team-high 39 pars, tied for the fifth most in the event.

"I told Spencer yesterday that he was due," said Coach LaFave. "He hit the ball well and he is another player we have that can give us a good score."

Sophomore Kyle Gaines tied his career best with a 220 (73-72-75), the third time in his career that he has reach that number, as he shared 37th place.

Freshman Eric Macrow posted a season-low 222 (77-72-73) for 40th, while junior Aaron Knutson shot a 224 (77-73-74) for 51st.

"I think the best thing I have seen from this group so far is that they are all capable of playing great and picking each other up," said Coach LaFave. "Wil didn't have a great day today, but we were able to still go out there and finish up strong."

The Titans will hit the practice links for the next few weeks before playing in the Wright State Invitational from April 4-5.
