ROCK HILL, S.C. (3/27/2015) -- Louisa Coppola began her outdoor track and field season the way she left off during indoor season, by winning the 5,000 meter run as the University of Detroit Mercy women's track and field team competed Friday at the Winthrop Invitational. The Titans began the meet on Thursday with the start of the combined events.
The individual-only meet at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex features roughly 40 teams overall and concludes on Saturday.
Coppola, the 2015 Horizon League Indoor champion in the Mile Run, won the 5,000 meters by more than six seconds, crossing in 17:29.70. She finished first out of 49 runners who finished the event.
Junior
Allison Garner ran a time of 12.66 in the 100 meter dash to finish 10th overall and crossed in 25.70 in the 200 meter dash to place 12th in the event.
Shannon Marchant won her heat in the 400 meter dash and had the ninth-fastest time of the day at 58.90.
Senior
Hana Hunt and junior
Aisha Potts-Tyre each competed in the heptathlon for the Titans on Thursday and Friday. Potts-Tyre and Hunt each placed inside the top 10 out of 17 competitors who scored overall. Potts-Tyre placed second in both the 100 meter hurdles (15.05) and shot put (10.40m/34'1.5") and was third in the long jump (4.87m/15'11.75") on her way to finishing seventh overall with 4,045 points.
Hunt was sixth in the 200 meter dash (27.19) and seventh in the 800 meter run (2:33.09) as she finished with 3,922 points to place ninth in the heptathlon.
Junior
Jessica Doherty earned a PR of 12.74 and freshman
Alyson Hamilton crossed in 13.12 in the 100 meter dash. Doherty recorded a time of 26.78 in the 200 meter dash, Hamilton had a time of 27.37, sophomore
Natalie Peterson followed in 27.90 and classmate
Paige Anderson crossed in 28.80 in the event.
Seven Titans in all competed in the 5,000 meter run. Freshman
Taylor Smith earned a PR with a time of 18:21.62 to place 13th and senior
Sara Taylor followed in 15th, crossing in 18:23.28, a personal best by more than 20 seconds. Freshman
Sydnie Fetherolf had a time of 19:09.05 for 22nd, freshman
Jenny Ponkowski was 25th with a time of 19:17.85 and sophomore
Devon Sutton placed 26th posting a time of 19:20.15. Freshman
Sydney Shaw rounded out the group with a time of 20:12.39.

Samantha Zakalowski earned a PR in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.09 and freshman
Brogan Holmes was just behind in 1:02.50. Junior
Grace Battista posted a time of 1:03.13 and junior
Alani Letang crossed in 1:05.22 to round out competitors in the 400 meters.
Alexandra Lindig paced Detroit in the long jump with a leap of 4.71 meters (15'5.5"), while sophomore
Paige Anderson reached 4.61 meters (15'1.5").
Sophomore
Ashley Bayles placed 10th for the Titans in the shot put, earning a distance of 12.25 meters (40'2.25"). Freshman
Delaney O'Rourke made her debut in the hammer throw, reaching 32.88 meters (107'10.75"). O'Rourke also finished 28th out of 69 competitors in the shot put with a toss of 10.86 meters (35'7.75").
The Winthrop Invitational is set to start Saturday at 8 a.m. for the final day of competition. Full results will be made available following the conclusion of the meet.
