DAYTON, Ohio (4/6/2015) -- Junior
Wil Wittmann led three Titans in the top 20 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team ended the regular season at the Wright State Collegiate on Tuesday at the Par 71, 6,705-yard Miami Valley Golf Club.
The Titans tied for the best round of the day with a 290, which was also tied for the third best round in the event. It was the third best 18-hole score of the year for the red, white and blue behind the 286 in the second round at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate and the 288 it shot in the second round of the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.
"We have been finishing strong the last few tournaments and that is a good feeling to have with the Horizon League Championships coming up," said head coach
Luke LaFave '02. "We have to work some more, especially on our short game, but this group keeps on improving."
Detroit shared fifth place overall with an 894 (306-298-290), just five strokes out of fourth and eight shy of third.
Wittmann led the way by taking 12th with a 222 (75-74-73), improving his score in every round and ending with a 2-over 73 on the final 18. His 37 pars were tied for the second most in the field and he also had four birdies.
Sophomore
Spencer Lendzion tied for 13th for his third career top-20 finish. He knocked in a team-high nine birdies – tied for seventh in the field – and also had 28 pars.
Freshman
Eric Macrow recorded his first-ever top-20 effort by tying for 19th with a 225 (79-73-73). The rookie finished the event with back-to-back 2-over 73's and also led the competition with a 2.73, -3 score on the course's Par 3's. Overall, he had 32 pars and six birdies.
"Spencer didn't strike the ball great today, but as long as he is able to keep himself mentally in the game, he can play well," said Coach LaFave. "Eric is starting to become that rock for us in the middle of the line-up that we are able to count on for some good scores."
Junior
Aaron Knutson shared 26th with a 227 (75-79-73). His final round score of 2-over 73 included the team's lone eagle as he nailed in a 10-foot putt on the Par 5 14th hole. He was also second on the squad with 34 pars.
Sophomore
Kyle Gaines tied for 28th with a 228 (79-76-73), posting seven birdies in the event, while freshman
Devan Schulert shot a 244 (79-85-80) to share 60th.
As a team, the Titans tallied the third most pars with 158 and scored the third best marks on the course's Par 3's (3.13) and Par 4's (4.32).
Detroit will now hit the practice links for a couple of weeks as it gets ready for the Horizon League Championships, which will once again return to the Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon's Course in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida, from April 24-26.
