Titans Close Out Play At NKU Fall Classic

BATAVIA, Ohio (9/28/2015) --
The University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team had two players in the top 30 as the Titans took ninth place at the NKU Fall Classic.

Redshirt Junior David Thompson topped the team shooting a season-low 222 (74-73-75), while junior Kyle Gaines tallied a season-best 224 (75-73-76). Senior Wil Wittmann had the best round on the day with a 3-over 74 as he finished in a tie for 48th alongside classmate Josh Shaw with a 231.

Overall, Detroit recorded a 907 (306-298-303) for ninth place.

The red, white and blue will get right back to work as they get ready for the CSU Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State at the Barrington Country Club in Aurora, Ohio, from Oct. 5-6.

THE SCORECARD
THOMPSON IMPRESSIVE AGAIN
  • For the second-straight week, redshirt junior David Thompson led the Titans as he posted a season-best 222 (74-73-75).
  • He also carded a season-low 2-over 73 in the second round, which was tied for the second-best 18-hole score by a Titan in the tournament.

PLAYING THE COURSE
  • David Thompson tied for the event high with 38 pars.
  • He also added four birdies

WITTMANN'S GONE BIRDIE
  • Wil Wittmann was tied for second in the tournament with a team-best 12 birdies, including five on the final 18.
  • He also lowered his score in every round as he started the event with a 79 before going 78 in round two and a 3-over 74 to end it. 

SHAW BACK IN THE MIX
  • Senior Josh Shaw made his first start in over a year and shared 48th carding a 231 (78-75-78).
  • He posted six birdies and 30 pars in his 54 holes.

ALL GAINES
  • Kyle Gaines tallied a season-low 224 (75-73-76).
  • His 2-over 73 in round two was tied for the Titan low round in the tournament.
  • He also finished second on the team with 32 pars and seven birdies.

WRAPPING IT UP

UP NEXT
  • Detroit will play in Horizon League rival Cleveland State's tournament for the fourth-straight year as the Titans compete in the CSU Invitational next week, Oct. 5-6, at the Par 72 7,049-yard Barrington Country Club in Aurora, Ohio.
