Complete ResultsDETROIT (1/17/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team dropped its season opener, 5-2, to Bowling Green State University Sunday night from the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, Mich.
The Titans (0-1) lost a close battle with the Falcons (1-1), with two singles matches reaching an extra third frame and the doubles point going down to the wire.
Junior
Viktoria Laskutova and freshman
Iris Thioux opened doubles with a 6-2 victory over the BGSU duo of Floyd and Farrar, before the Falcons evened the score with a 6-1 win in position two. The Titans received a valiant effort from seniors
Valeryia Kulikovskaya and
Irina Slizovskaya, but the pair ultimately fell, 7-6, in a tight affair to the Bowling Green top line.
In singles, junior
Anna Davydova earned a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 victory from the third position, while classmate
Nynke Van Der Goot cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph from the fifth spot.
Kulikovskaya opened with a 6-4 win in the first set from the first position, but the Falcons' Polina Radeva answered with a 6-3 win in the second and secured the point with a 6-3 edge in the third.
Laskutova earned a 6-4 win in the first from the fourth position, but Emily Witt stormed back with a 7-5 win in the second and clinched the point with a 10-6 decision in the third.
The Titans return to action Friday, Jan. 22 at Western Michigan University. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. from Kalamazoo, Mich.
