Men’s Tennis Edged by Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio (2/12/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team dropped a close, 4-3, battle on the road to the University of Toledo on Friday night from the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.
 
The Titans dropped the opening point in doubles as the Rockets clinched with a pair of wins from the first and second positions. Detroit fought back into the match with three victories in singles, but found themselves on the wrong side of a 4-3 decision for the second time this year.
 
Sophomore Nathan Ponton led the Titans with a win from the second position by convincing scores of 6-3 and 6-1. Junior Kacper Stelmaszak followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 win from the sixth spot, while freshman Nicholas Solarewicz earned the win with decisions of 6-1 and 7-5.
 
The deciding point came down to senior Rafael Orantes from the third position. Orantes bounced back from a defeat in the first set to answer with a 6-4 win in the second, but fell in the third and decisive set.
 
Toledo improves to 3-5 with the win, while Detroit falls to 2-6 with the loss.
 
The Titans have a day to rest up before returning to action Sunday at Western Michigan University.
