Men’s Track & Field Shines at GVSU Tune-Up

ALLENDALE, Mich. (2/19/16) - The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field teams returned to competition Friday for the last regular-season indoor meet of the season and shined at the GVSU Tune-Up.
 
Detroit finished the day with five top-5 finishers and 10 top-10 places.
 
Ryan Hofsess placed first among 23 runners in the mile run and picked up the win with a personal record time of 4:16.02, nearly two seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Charlie Felton set a season-best mark of 4:18.60 as he finished fourth, while Colin Hooker set a personal record of 4:27.71. 
 
Junior Ilia Panev returned to action with a mark of 8.41 in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries and clocked in at 8.49 in the finals, good for sixth in the event.
 
Carlton Sims finished just outside scoring range with a seventh-place showing and 7.17 mark in the 60-meter dash. Sims ran a 7.16 in the preliminary rounds to tie the 10th-best all-time Detroit mark.
 
It was a Titan battle in the 800-meter run, with Joshua Carolin leading the pack in 10th at 1:56.96. Max Rogowski, Andrew Heitzhaus, Colton Wirgau and Nathaniel Nunez each set personal records as the foursome filed across the line, with Rogowski clocking in at 1:57.87, Heitzhaus at 1:58.28, Wirgau at 2:01.65 and Nunez at 2:03.87.
 
Sims improved his mark in the 200-meter dash with a fourth-place finish at 22.64, while Zach Arnold set a personal record in the event with a 22.77, good for eighth.  Arnold backed it up with an eighth-place showing in the 400-meter dash at 50.89.
 
Freshman Nick Scalzi set a pair of personal records in the shot put and the weight throw. Scalzi hit the 14.19-meter mark in the shot put, before clearing 13.68 meters in the weight throw. Jake Millyard recorded a toss of 14.09 meters in the weight throw to lead UDM.
 
In the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Cody Smith led Detroit with a fifth-place finish and 16:09.61 mark, while Colin Creagh led the Titans with a time of 8:59.41 in the 3,000-meter run.
 
The foursome of Colton Wirgau, Panev, Joe Harmon and Carolin paced Detroit in the 4x400-meter relay and finished fourth at 3:28.46, just .06 out of third place.
 
The Titans return to action next weekend for the Horizon League Indoor Championships from Youngstown State University. The two-day event will span Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27-28, from the Watson and Tressell Training Site.
