DETROIT (4/16/2016) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team saw senior
Irina Slizovskaya and freshman
Iris Thioux post wins in singles, but a few other matches just didn't go the Titans way in a 5-2 loss to UIC on Saturday at the Titan Tennis Courts on the James K. Campbell Complex.
Detroit (4-9, 3-4 HL) had its chances against perennial HL power UIC (12-5, 6-0 HL), but two three-set singles matches went to the Flames as well as the decisive tiebreaker in doubles.
Slizovskaya was cool and composed in her 6-4, 7-5 victory over Ann-Sophie Hahn at No. 2 singles, while Thioux rebounded from a tough second set to win her match at No. 5, 6-3, 0-6, 6-2, over Rachel Le Comber.
UDM nearly had two more singles matches, but senior Valeryia Kulikovskay came up on the wrong end of a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 affair at No. 3 and junior
Viktoria Laskutova fell at No. 6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
In doubles, Thioux and junior
Nynke Van Der Goot had an easy time with a 6-2 triumph at No. 3 over Jackie Altansarnai and Bianca Zuzu.
The doubles point came down to the No. 1 spot as Slizovskaya and junior
Anna Davydova battled the top squad from UIC in Le Comber and Oana Manole in a marathon bout. The doubles tandem fought hard sending it deep into a tiebreaker, but the Titans were thwarted, 7-6 (8), as the Flames took the early lead.
The red, white and blue will need to put the loss behind them as they get ready for a home match against Valparaiso tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. The match is part of a Titan tennis doubleheader with the men facing the Crusaders at 10:00 a.m.
