DETROIT (4/17/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team had a strong showing from both the Bison Outdoor Classic and the Golden Grizzly Invite on Saturday.
The team split, with long distance runners heading to the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell and most of the team heading to the Golden Grizzly Invite at Oakland.
BISON OUTDOOR CLASSIC
Ryan Hofsess and
Charlie Felton finished third and fourth in the first heat of the 1500-meter run with personal records of 3:56.10 and 3:56.47, respectively. Hofsess placed 38
th overall and Felton finished just behind in 39
th among a 60-man field. The marks are the seventh and ninth-best in the Detroit record book.
The duo was back at it with a couple of more personal records on Sunday. Hofsess set a personal best in the 800 meter with a time of 1:55.21, while Felton set a career mark at 1:58.47.
Sophomore
Ben Kendell finished third among 33 in the 5000-meter run, improving his all-time Detroit record to 14:17.87.
Austin Wigent clocked in at 31:46.61 in the 10,000-meter run, the ninth-best time in Titan history.
GOLDEN GRIZZLY INVITE
The Detroit men's team finished fourth despite splitting the squad, earning 85 points across 20 events at the Golden Grizzly Invite. The Detroit men and women combined to finish fourth with 115 total points.
Khalil Parris placed first in the 400-meter hurdles, improving his season best to 52.20 to earn 10 points. Parris finished the event 1.51 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
Senior
Colin Cashner finished second in the hammer throw, earning eight points with a toss of 64.48 meters.
Ilia Panev earned two points for the Titans after an eighth-place mark of 58.98.
The Detroit foursome of Panev,
Carlton Sims,
Zach Arnold and
Brandon Wilks took gold in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 42.46, the eighth-best mark in program history.
The Titans took their second first-place relay finish in the 4x400-meter, with Sims, Webster, Wilks and Parris leading the pack with a time of 3:15.11.
In the 400-meter dash,
Carlton Sims earned six points with a third-place finish at 48.60.
Anton Webster earned four points after a time of 49.46 gave him a fifth-place score. Arnold finished eighth with a time of 50.82.
Wilks took silver in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 10.77.
Zach Sand finished 11
th in the event with a time of 11.81.
Joshua Carolin earned four points in the 800-meter run after finishing fifth with a time of 1:55.65.
Nathaniel Nunez also earned a point after clocking in at 2:06.56.
Sims earned a pair of points in the 200-meter dash with an eighth-place mark of 22.35. Arnold finished just out of the points with a time of 22.60.
Cody Smith earned three points with a seventh-place showing in the 5000-meter run at 16:21.23.
Nick Scalzi earned three points in the shot put after clearing 14.02 meters.
In the triple jump, Sand earned five points after finishing fourth at 12.32 meters.
Jarod Hoekstra cleared 1.71 meters in the high jump to collect five points for the Titans.
In the discus throw, Scalzi collected two more points with a toss of 41.98 meters.
Jake Millyard finished just outside of the scoring with a toss of 38.64 meters.
