DETROIT (4/3/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team was edged 4-3 in a tight battle against the Cleveland State Vikings on Sunday afternoon from the Franklin Athletic Club.
The Vikings earned the early point by taking two of three doubles matches, before a furious Detroit rally in singles tied the match 3-3.
Nathan Ponton got things going with a dominant 6-2 and 6-0 win from the No. 2 singles position and
Patryk Koscielski continued the trend with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Joe VanMeter from the top singles line.
Cleveland State answered with hard fought wins from the third and sixth positions, but freshman
Adam Zychowicz responded with a three-set win from the fifth spot to even the match, 3-3.
The match-deciding point came down to the fourth position, where Kevin Goth outlasted
Ismail Kadyrov, 6-2, 5-7 and 6-3 with teammates and fans crowded around.
Detroit will look to bounce back next Sunday, April 10 at Northern Kentucky.
