WILLIAMSBURG, VA. (4/2/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team secured a top-10 finish with 10 points on the final day of the Colonial Relays on a wet Saturday from the College of William and Mary.
The Colonial Relays is one of the largest, if not the largest, scored meet of the outdoor season outside of the NCAA Championships. More than 60 teams, mostly from NCAA Division I, descended upon Williamsburg this weekend.
The Titans entered the day in seventh place and secured a top-10 finish with 10 points on the final day from the Colonial Relays. Detroit tied Columbia for 10
th overall in a field of 55 teams. UDM finished one spot ahead Villanova and just a few points back of eighth place.
The 1,600-meter sprint medley foursome of
Carlton Sims,
Zach Arnold,
Khalil Parris and
Anton Webster placed third to earn six points with a run of 3:26.74.
In the 4x1,500-meter relay,
Charlie Felton,
Ben Kendell,
Derek Gielarowski and
Ryan Hofsess won the second heat and placed sixth overall with a mark of 16:10.19. The time just missed the all-time Detroit record.
The place earned three points for the Titans to push them back inside the top ten, before Arnold, Sims, Webster and
Ilia Panev gave Detroit another point with an eighth-place finish in the 4x400-meter at 3:19.63.
In the 4x800-meter,
Joshua Carolin, Hofsess,
Max Rogowski and
Andrew Heitzhaus finished in 14
th with a time of 7:52.60.
In the discuss finals, two Titans recorded top-15 finishes as
Jake Millyard placed 11
th with a throw of 38.51 meters and
Nick Scalzi followed with a 37.58 heave, the 13
th best mark in the field.
Detroit returns to action next weekend for the 11
th annual Duals vs. Oakland. The meet is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start from Titan Field in Detroit, Mich.
