DAYTON, Ohio (4/9/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team fell in a 4-3 heartbreaker at Wright State in Horizon League action from the South Regency Tennis Center on Saturday evening in Ohio.
The Raiders earned the early 1-0 edge after taking all three doubles matches. Detroit answered with three wins in singles, but fell in a dramatic three-set thriller from the top line to finish on the wrong side of the 4-3 decision.
Freshman
Iris Thioux and junior
Viktoria Laskutova got the rally started with wins from the fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Thioux outlasted Aby Madrigal in three sets, 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3, before Laskutova came back to edge Megan Brdicka 3-6, 6-2 and 6-2.
Senior
Valeryia Kulikovskaya earned a dramatic 6-1, 1-6 and 6-3 win from the third position to level the match, 3-3.
After a 6-2 defeat in the opening set, junior
Anna Davydova roared back to tie the No. 1 singles match with a 6-4 win in the second. After a back and forth affair, Karoline Haller outlasted Davydova 6-3 to give Wright State the 4-3 win.
The loss is Detroit's second straight by a 4-3 edge. The Titans fall to 3-8 overall and 2-3 in Horizon League play, while Wright state improves to 16-7 overall and 3-3 in league play.
The Titans are back in action on Sunday at Northern Kentucky. Detroit and NKU are scheduled for an 11 a.m. start from the Bluegrass State.
