Nathan Ponton picked up a win in the main draw of singles and newcomer
Luka Soskic picked up a pair of wins in the qualifying draw of singles to lead the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team at the ITA Midwest Regionals presented by Oracle from the Varisty Tennis Center at Michigan.
Soskic opened up the tournament with a comeback win in three sets over Eric Marbach of Northern Illinois. Soskic dropped the opening frame, 6-2, but answered with wins of 6-3 and 7-5. Soskic backed it up with a convincing win over Brandon Ancona from Valparaiso, before bowing out against Notre Dame's Will Howells in the final round of the qualifying draw.
Ponton picked up a big win against Michigan's Gabe Tishman despite a loss in the opening set. The senior bounced back from a 7-5 loss in the first set to record a 7-5 win in the second. Ponton closed the match with a 6-0 win in the third, but would fall in the second round to Aleks Kovacevic from Illinois.
Ponton and Soskic teamed up in doubles to take on Michigan's Mattias Siimar and Kristofer Siimar, with the Wolverine duo edging the Titan pair, 8-6.
The Titans now head into fall and winter workouts to prepare for the upcoming regular season that begins in January of 2018.
