HOMEWOOD, Ill. (3/3/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team kicked off a seven-game road trip with a 6-1 win over Chicago State on Friday morning from H-F Racquet and Fitness Center.
The Titans picked up the doubles point after wins from
Nathan Ponton and
Artem Vasheshnikov on the top line and Kaceper Stelmaszak and
Adam Zychowicz from the third position. Ponton and Vasheshnikov picked up a 6-4 win, while Stelmaszak and Zychowicz took their match 6-3. Koscielski and Conley were paired on the second line, but the match went unfinished.
In singles, the Titans cruised to victory after taking five of six matches.
Vasheshnikov pulled out a gritty three-set win from the top line. The newcomer won the opening set 6-3, before falling in the second 7-5. In the decisive third frame, Vasheshnikov edged Felix Savard 10-8.
Senior
Patryk Koscielski powered to a 6-2, 6-1 win from the second position, as did classmate
Chance Conley from the sixth position. Conley took the match 6-1 and 6-0.
Junior
Nathan Ponton earned a 6-4 and 6-4 win from the third singles position, while Stelmaszak recorded a 6-1, 6-4 win from No. 4.
Zychowicz was deadlocked in a heated battle from the fifth position and bounced back from a 7-6 loss in the opening set to pick up a 7-5 win in the second, but could not complete the comeback after falling in a close 10-8 decision in the third.
The Titans earn their first road win of the season with the victory and improve to 4-6 on the season. Detroit Mercy will look to keep the momentum rolling tomorrow against Eastern Illinois. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
