SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (4/16/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team picked up a 4-3 win over Northern Kentucky in Horizon League action on Sunday afternoon from Franklin Athletic Club.
The win makes it four in a row for the Titans and increases their season win total to 10 – the highest total for the program since it was reinstated in 2009. The 10 wins is also the most for Detroit Mercy since 1991, when the Titans went 11-6.
The Titans earned the victory in comeback fashion as the visiting Norse of NKU earned the doubles point to open the match.
Senior
Patryk Koscielski evened the score at 1-1 with a quick 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and classmate
Chance Conley put the Titans ahead with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
Sophomore
Adam Zychowicz bounced back from a 6-1 loss in the opening set of No. 5 singles with a 6-1 win in the second and a 6-4 victory in the third, putting Detroit Mercy ahead 3-1.
NKU would claw back to tie it after taking Nos. 3 and 4 singles, but sophomore
Artem Vasheshnikov earned the clinching point at No. 1 as both teams watched anxiously. Vasheshnikov outlasted Mate Virag in three sets, 7-6, 4-6 and 6-4.
Nathan Ponton saw his seven-match win streak snapped as the junior fell in a grueling three-set match at No. 3 singles.
With the win, Detroit Mercy improves to 10-11 overall and 4-1 in Horizon League action. The Titans will look to keep the momentum going when the squad returns to the court next weekend at UIC (Apr. 22) and Valpo (Apr. 23).
