DETROIT (4/2/17) – The University of Detroit Mercy suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Green Bay as the Phoenix rallied to earn a 4-3 win in the Titans' Horizon League opener from the Titan Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.
Detroit Mercy used a gritty effort to earn the doubles point over the Phoenix and got off to a strong start in singles, leading in five matches through the early going.
Senior
Patryk Koscielski put the Titans on the board with the first singles win at No. 2 and junior
Nathan Ponton followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win from No. 3.
Needing all four remaining singles matches for the win, Green Bay did just that as Charlie Ridout and Ivan Radomirovic took Nos. 5 and 6 in straight sets. The final two matches would go to three frames, but the Phoenix carried the momentum and picked up wins from No. 1 and No. 4 to escape with the 4-3 win.
Ponton and
Artem Vasheshnikov picked up a doubles win from the Titans top line, with
Chance Conley and Koscielski clinching the doubles point for Detroit Mercy with a gutty 7-5 win at No. 2.
Ponton won his fourth straight singles match, improving to 15-6 on the year and 12-5 from the third position.
With the loss, Detroit Mercy falls to 6-11 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The Phoenix, meanwhile, improved to 6-7 overall and 3-0 in league action.
The Titans will look to bounce back with a pair of Horizon League matches next weekend at Youngstown State (Apr. 8) and Cleveland State (Apr. 9).
