DETROIT (1/12/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team hits the road to kick off the 2018 season on Sunday at Western Michigan University.
The match is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. from West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Titans also opened the spring season against WMU a year ago, falling 6-1 as
Artem Vasheshnikov picked up the lone win in singles.
As a team during the fall, the Titans went 14-8 in singles and 3-3 in doubles. Newcomer Luka Soskic posted a strong 5-1 record in singles with a pair of wins at the ITA Midwest Regionals, while returning veterans
Nathan Ponton and
Adam Zychowicz combined for a 7-2 singles record.
In doubles, Ponton and Soskic led the team with a 2-1 record. Alvaro Arce and Zychowicz won their only doubles matchup in the fall.
The Titans return its top two in singles wins from 2017 in Ponton (20-8) and First Team All-Horizon League honoree Vasheshnikov (19-10).
Ismail Kadyrov also returns in 2018 after missing the majority of 2016-17 with an injury.
Detroit Mercy will feature a trio of fresh faces in 2018 with Arce, Soskic and Gvidas Motuzas looking to help the Titans pick back up where they left off a year ago, when the team posted its best season since 1991.
