KALAMAZOO, Mich. (1/14/18) – Junior 
Artem Vasheshnikov picked up the first win in Titan history over a ranked opponent as the University of Detroit Mercy men's tennis team fell in the 2018 opener at Western Michigan, 5-2, on Sunday evening.
 
Vasheshnikov, a First Team All-Horizon League honoree in 2017, defeated No. 65 Maik Steiner in three grueling sets to lead the Titan effort from the top singles line. Vasheshnikov earned a 6-4 win in the opening set, before Steiner evened the score with a 6-4 win of his own in the second. Vasheshnikov emerged with the victory after a 10-5 edge in the final frame.
 
Newcomer Gvidas Motuzas added a win from the sixth position, downing the Broncos' Zac Faveri 7-6, 6-3 and 11-9.
 
Western Michigan earned the doubles point and took the first three singles decisions to seal the win. Junior 
Adam Zychowicz forced a third set with a 6-4 win in the second, but would fall from the fifth position.
 
Detroit Mercy returns to the court next weekend as the squad heads to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on Purdue. The Titans and Boilermakers will square off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20.
