DETROIT (1/18/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team kicks off the 2018 season with three matches in as many days, hosting Akron on Friday and taking on Grand Canyon University and Michigan State University from East Lansing, Mich. on Saturday and Sunday.
The Titans and Zips are set for a 12 p.m. start from Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield on Friday. Saturday's match against GCU is slated for a 12 p.m. start, while Sunday's showdown with the Spartans is set for 5 p.m.
Detroit Mercy returns five players from last year's squad, led by junior
Iris Thioux's 12 singles wins and
Pauline Van Herck's 11 wins. Sophomores
Marie Maitrot,
Ksenia Providokhina and
Sara Mitrakovic are also back and join with newcomers Sophie Torcello, Chelsea Apawti and Jasmine Apawti.
Last season, the Titans earned the four-seed in the Horizon League Tournament after going 10-11 overall during the regular season and 6-3 in conference play.
Following this weekend's action, the Titans take a brief break before returning to the court against Utah State in East Lansing on Feb. 2.
